What Is a Press Release?
A press release is a formal written announcement that an organization prepares for journalists, publishers, stakeholders, or the public. It presents a specific piece of news in a structured format so readers can quickly understand what happened, who is involved, why it matters, and where to get more information.
Common subjects include product launches, funding, acquisitions, partnerships, executive appointments, events, research, expansions, awards, and other company developments.
A press release is not an advertisement
A useful press release leads with verifiable information. Promotional language, unsupported superlatives, and vague claims make it harder for a reader to identify the actual news. The release can explain why the announcement matters, but it should distinguish facts from quotes and opinion.
Typical structure
Most releases include a headline, optional subheadline, date and location line, opening paragraph, supporting details, one or more attributed quotes, company background, and media contact information. The exact format can vary, but the reader should not have to search for the central announcement.
What makes a release useful?
Specificity. State the event, date, product, amount, location, participating companies, or other concrete facts that define the announcement. If there are important limitations or conditions, include them rather than creating a misleading impression.
A press release does not guarantee media coverage. It is source material. Journalists and publishers decide independently whether the announcement is relevant to their audience.
